佐藤 剛志

Sato Tsuyoshi

Sato Tsuyoshi is a distinguished ceramic artist who combines the spirit of Kutani-yaki (九谷焼) ceramics with the techniques of sumi-e (墨絵, Japanese ink painting). As he learned the pottery techniques of Kutani-yaki at the Kutani Ceramic Art Institute (九谷焼技術研修所) starting in 1986 under the guidance of Takao Togei (高尾益俊), Satō mastered the unique sumi-e technique known as Tsukedate (付け立て). This technique allows him to create expressive, one-of-a-kind pieces that are full of artistic tension and vitality.

Known for his craftsmanship, Sato independently handles every aspect of his work—from shaping on the potter’s wheel to the finishing touches. Through his careful integration of sumi-e brushwork, which requires absolute precision and leaves no room for error, he brings to life each piece with a distinct dynamism and character that is unparalleled. His works, infused with the charm and allure of ceramics, reflect the essence and beauty of Kutani-yaki.

Since 1992, Sato’s creations have been exhibited in the Ishikawa Prefecture Ink Painting Association (石川県水墨画協会), earning him widespread recognition. Each of his pieces embodies his dedication to the craft and offers a glimpse into the lively world of Kutani ceramics.
